A Simple Guide on Furnace Maintenance

Home / A Simple Guide on Furnace Maintenance

Your heating system needs to be in optimal working condition at all times. Needless to say, you shouldn’t wait till it gets cold outside to begin working on your heating system, unless you want to scramble to secure an appointment for furnace repair in Calgary, AB at the last minute.

The good news is that there is a way to keep your furnace in good shape, and that is routine furnace maintenance. While the more complex and technical aspects of the tune-up should definitely be left to the professionals such as Prostar Plumbing and Heating, there are simple maintenance tasks you can carry out.

1. Shut Off Supply

Turn off the fuel supply and the electrical power before commencing your annual maintenance. Check the cellar stairs and you’ll find the red power button, or you can find it close to the burner, depending on the model. Ask your furnace installation technician for confirmation.

2. Clean The Combustion Chamber

The combustion chamber is where the furnace does most of its work. As such, there’ll be an accumulation of carbon dust and other debris in there. If left for a long time, such buildups can damage the furnace. It’s possible to clean the combustion chamber using a small wire brush. Many heating repair specialists will also do this to rule out problems that might be due to dust buildup.

3. Inspect The Flue Pipe

Check if there’s any holes in the flue pipe that might lead to carbon monoxide leakage. This is likely to happen in the section where the furnace connects with the pipe. If possible, be sure to adjust the barometric damper of the pipe. You don’t necessarily have to go for a furnace replacement if your flue pipe becomes damaged, but you will need to get that flue pipe checked.

4. Replace The Oil Filter

During the winter, when the temperature plummets, all the air you breathe in the house goes via the filter. While it might not be possible to change every few weeks, it’s advisable to replace it every few months or so.
